  • Shoot from above, tiles face-up, good light.
  • Stand your rack's tiles flat or tilt the phone to face them.
  • A whole table works too — your hand, discards and the wall.

With a photo of this year's card, the coach can name the exact hand to go for. It's only used for your answer and isn't saved.

American games start with the Charleston: everyone passes 3 tiles right, then across, then left (you can never pass a joker). A second round — left, across, right — is optional, and then you may trade up to 3 with the player across. East has 14 tiles and goes first by discarding.

    1. DrawTake the next tile from the wall (or claim the tile someone just threw — see step 4).
    2. LookDoes it fit the hand you're building? In American, also check the table: you can swap a real tile for a joker in anyone's exposed set. If it finishes your hand, call “Mah Jongg!”
    3. DiscardThrow one tile face-up into the middle and say its name. You always end with the same number of tiles.
    4. WatchIf another player's discard completes a set for you, call it and take it, then show the set and discard. In American you can only call to finish a group of 3 or more — or to win.
